Uraia Wetu Project

CSO Participation in Democratic Governance

Promoting an enabling environment for effective civil society engagement in democratic governance in Tanzania.

Overview

The Uraia Wetu Project, funded by the European Union, is committed to  contribute to an improved and enabling policy framework and environment for CSOs for effective CSOs operations.  enhancing civil society engagement in Tanzania’s democratic governance. The project focuses on creating a more enabling legal and policy environment that empowers civil society organizations (CSOs) to actively participate in governance processes.
Our primary goal is to strengthen the legal and policy framework that supports CSOs as key actors in decision-making and public accountability. To measure our impact, we track:

* The number of legal and policy amendments influenced by CSOs at local and national levels.
* The percentage of CSOs reporting an improved operating environment due to our initiatives.
Through strategic advocacy, capacity building, and multi-stakeholder dialogues, Uraia Wetu is driving meaningful reforms that enhance civic space and democratic participation across Tanzania.

Objectives & Key Focus Areas

The European Union (EU) will support the “Uraia Wetu” initiative for three years from 2023 to 2025. As part of the project’s implementation, FCS has issued TZS 4,916,402,000 in subgrants to twelve (12) CSOs in both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar to undertake activities that will contribute to the realisation of the project's objectives. Ms Edna Chilimo, the FCS Programmes Manager in charge of Governance and Social Inclusion, said the project focuses on promoting meaningful participation of civil society in multistakeholder policy processes and strengthening CSOs’ capacity to promote public accountability.

The project exemplifies FCS and the EU's dedication to promoting and safeguarding human rights through dialogue, advocacy, and technical interventions. These efforts target media freedom, access to quality information, peace and conflict prevention, civic participation (especially for women and youth), access to justice for vulnerable populations, and anti-corruption initiatives.

Impact & Achievements

FCS aims to ensure that the people are empowered and responsible, and get their basic economic and societal rights to make their lives better. The EU-funded project will also strengthen CSOs' capabilities to ensure effective engagement with the government and key development actors. With increased capabilities, CSOs will be able to play their roles effectively, and engage with the government to influence change,
